How The Hollywood Machine Creates Monsters!
OK, what do Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Kirsten Dunst and Drew Barrymore have in common? If you said that they were all child stars you would be right. If you said they all have made multiple trips to rehab you would also be correct.
Why do these kids who seemingly have everything going for them have such a hard time as adults? Well, I’m not a psychologist nor do I play one on TV, but here are my opinions.
My Stage Mom is Better Than Your Stage Mom!
Parents… that’s right the “stage moms” and “stage dads” who relentlessly push their kids toward “stardom.” Some are living vicariously through their children by fulfilling their own failed dreams. Some have dollar signs in their eyes. And some actually believe that they are doing what’s best for their children by assuring their financial and career success.
What they are forgetting is that everyone needs to have a childhood. And a child shouldn’t have the pressures of adulthood forced on them. Look what happened to Michael Jackson when he was robbed of his childhood. He went from a cute child star to a creepy adult (whatever he is.)
The Burdens of Celebrity
Hollywood is also to blame. They are so caught up in the money machine that they fail to see the impact they’re having on these kids lives. Imagine the immense pressure that the child star is under. They are responsible for the success of a multi-million dollar film and the careers of the cast, crew, directors, producers and 100’s of others depending on income from the movie or music video.
Now think about your own childhood. Did your parents put you to work to pay the family bills at age three? Or did you get to actually be childlike and not worry about the livelihoods of people you didn’t even know? I’m guessing that most of us didn’t have those kind of worries at a young age. Is it any wonder that many child stars have issues?
Please Don’t Shoot My Dog!
In his autobiography, child star, Jackie Cooper (Our Gang) recounts how director Norman Taurog threatened to shoot his real life dog if he didn’t cry convincingly for “Skippy”, his fallen dog in the movie of the same name. Is this how you motivate a nine year old?
Life In The Fast Lane
And finally you have the Hollywood lifestyle contributing to the downfall of so many young celebs. Sex, drugs and alcohol are readily available even to way underage stars. Reportedly Drew Barrymore snorted coke when she was eleven. God knows when Brit, Lyndsay and Kirsten started their bad habits.
The question is who supplied these children with drugs and booze. How was Drew Barrymore let into an adult nightclub (Studio 54) at age nine and publicly served alcohol? Where were her parents, agents and studio execs when this was happening? Where were all the adults who so greedily sought her money when she needed them the most?
The Road To Wellville
Thank goodness that Drew was able to beat her demons and has been sober for years. Let’s hope that the others on a destructive path can do the same. It would be a shame to have another tragedy befall them like the untimely death of River Phoenix.
That’s just how I feel.
If you don’t agree lets hear your argument.
Tom Miller
Why are so many of the current slate of child stars turning into basket cases? Is it the negative influence of Hollywood? Could it be the availability of alcohol, drugs and sex? Can becoming famous actually be hurting these child celebs.
